UBM INSTALLS LASERSCAN SYSTEM IN THE SURFACE METROLOGY LABORATORY AT WPI

SUNNYVALE, CA, April 10, 2000 -- UBM Corporation today announced the installation of a LaserScan™ 3D profilometer at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Surface Metrology Laboratory (www.wpi.edu/~tral).

UBM will continue to own and maintain the system also providing software and technical assistance to students and researchers. The LaserScan will be available for research at WPI and will as well be used by UBM as a demonstration unit for potential customers located on the East Coast of the United States.

The LaserScan system installed utilizes a dynamically focusing laser height sensor and precision mechanical stages to generate detailed topographic maps of the surfaces to be studied. Students and researchers will initially use the system to study surface related phenomenon ranging from studies on food surfaces, mechanical wear and friction, heat transfer, fracture mechanics, and substrate preparation for adhesion studies.

The Surface Metrology Lab at WPI is the only university laboratory in the United States dedicated to advancing topics in surface metrology. According to Torbjorn Bergstrom, manager of the lab, this collaboration with UBM will be a great addition to the capabilities of the lab.

UBM Corporation, headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA and founded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1984, develops and manufactures a broad range of non-contact 3D laser measurement systems for a wide range of applications in the automotive, electronics and semiconductor industries.
